The project consists in a research led by University and International Cooperation Organizations in the Dominican Republic. Starting from the analysis of the historical planning process of the island of Hispaniola, the research aims to find new possible ways of development for poor and emarginated contexts. By developing a new analytical methodology to study the territory, the aim is create a systematic pattern which can be extended to other developing countries, for analyzing their urban and rural areas. Collected data will be analyzed on a board with the historical urban morphologies, types of housing, the construction of housing (often subject to strong hurricanes). They will also highlight the ways in which immigration has brought a radical change in urban transformation, social and economic integration of the island. Particular attention will be devoted to bateyes, the poor settlements related to plantations in the region. Following this research we will look for possible patterns of growth and potential scenarios for better living these places; the project will also try to liaise the processes of urban transformation with new possible models of economic development
